We just finished honouring our veterans this past Remembrance Day and I spent the evening watching several documentaries about the horrors of World War II and the atrocities the Nazis were committing against not just the Jews, but anyone that opposed them. The carnage was unbelievable and will forever be a stain in our history. Knowing what we do now, would you think twice about offering asylum to Jewish refugees? Why not?! They spoke German, dressed like Germans, hell some of them had even voted Hitler into power in the first place. There could be a Nazi hiding with them! You wouldn’t have known. I’ll ask you again, would you hesitate to let Jewish refugees fleeing tyranny and genocide into Canada? Would you stall them for months so they could live in fear while you dotted your I’s and crossed your T’s? Terrorists don’t stop killing people because you need your paperwork in order.
Apparently 70% of Albertans surveyed in a Global News poll (highest in Canada by the way) have completely forgotten what Remembrance Day is actually about and said they were opposed to the Syrian refugees coming in so quickly. They are afraid that there may be a religious zealot or two in the bunch who are going to come over here and kill us all. This is completely absurd for 2 reasons:
- The Syrians agree with you! They think ISIS and their own Government is just as crazy as you do. They are afraid either one is going to kill them. That is why they are running away. The fanatics have been doing everything in their power to join their fellow idiots… in Syria – not Canada. The complete opposite of what you are afraid of. Denying Syrians trying to get away from their executioners would be the equivalent of locking the concert hall doors in Paris as people were trying to escape, and asking them to show you their passports before you let them out! Well hey one of those concert goers might be the actual gun men. Better lock them all up together just to be sure. (Are you starting to get the idea?)
- If you were a terrorist and you wanted to infiltrate a possible target what do you think is more effective? Simply buying a plane ticket and forging some documents for where you want to go? Or as the 70% seem to think…Spending months living in terrible conditions hoping that you're one of the lucky ones allowed to resettle somewhere with an even smaller chance that it was where you wanted to go, where you spend months if not years fighting red tape just to work and earn enough money to eat, all while being watched like a hawk before you gain enough freedom to commit your terrorist act? Seriously!!!? – That quite possibly is the most pathetic delivery system for terrorism I have ever heard of.
For every picture of the Nazis I googled to add to this blog I saw eerily similar ones of ISIS. They are the Nazis of our time. We know what needs to be done. We know they need to be fought and we know that history will remember our response. Being fearful of families with children in need of help is NOT the right one.
